NY New Works Theatre Festival: Meet Lance Ringel & In Love with the Arrow Collar Man

Name: Lance Ringel

What is your current project?

In Love with the Arrow Collar Man

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

My play will have its world premiere when an excerpt from it is presented in the New York New Works Theatre Festival in September.

What’s next for you?

Deep in rehearsals right now for the premiere in September. But in between, I am off to Uganda for a performance of a concert piece for which I wrote the original narration, directed by John Caird. It features the talents of orphaned children from Uganda and Japan, as well as American college students.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

Probably my spouse, Chuck Muckle. He not only is directing Arrow Collar Man in the festival but also is directing a musical that he composed which is also included in the festival, called Mourning Becomes Ridiculous. Plus September marks our 40th anniversary(!).

Lance Ringel’s play In Love with the Arrow Collar Man will receive its world premiere on September 7 at the New York New Works Theatre Festival. Ringel was principal writer of two theater pieces created for Vassar College. Vassar Voices, a staged reading highlighting 150 years of the college’s history, premiered at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The cast featured Meryl Streep, Lisa Kudrow and Frances Sternhagen. It toured across America and to London. At Home in the World, directed by John Caird, spotlights talented young performers. It has been staged in Japan, Uganda and America to sold-out houses. Collaborating with director-actor-composer Chuck Muckle (his spouse of 40 years), Ringel wrote Animal Story, a short musical for young audiences that received its New York premiere earlier this year. Ringel’s reputation as a writer of gay historical fiction was established with the critical acclaim accorded his 2014 novel Flower of Iowa (Smashwords), about an American and British soldier in World War I who fall in love. Kirkus Reviews called it “accomplished, touching historical fiction,” adding, “Ringel packs a remarkable amount of flavor and detail into this debut work.” Actor, author and director Stephen Fry tweeted, “Reading a truly wonderful WW1 novel. … So truthful and touching.” Ringel and Muckle divide their time between New York City and Poughkeepsie.

My year old son. I feel like I’m a more confident well rounded artist since surviving the first year of his life. He’s taught me how to be present and enjoy the moments I’m in.

NY New Works Theatre Festival: Meet Tasha Nicole Partee & In a Vision, or in None

Name: Tasha Nicole Partee

What is your current project?

A new drama with comedy called In a Vision, or in None

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

The play is making its world premiere at the New York New Works Theatre Festival on August 31st! I am really excited for the piece to take its first steps with the amazingly supportive and talented artists involved in this festival. In fact, it was the positive experiences of past participants that initially inspired me to submit to NYNWTF. Ultimately, I’d like to expand this short play into a full-length piece, but my hope is that it will provide a thought-provoking, meaningful experience to NYNW Theatre Festival audiences in its current form.

What’s next for you?

It has been an exciting and busy summer. I am about to wrap up a run of my first full-length play, Mrs. Schrodinger’s Cat, in the New York International Fringe Festival, while at the same time preparing In a Vision, or in None for its debut with NYNWTF. I am really looking forward to setting some time aside for processing the tremendous learning that has taken place through these experiences. I would like to think the end of the festivals does not mean the end of the road for the work. I plan to seek a mentor in playwriting and continue developing them!
Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

My husband Peter is my biggest inspiration. He has been the greatest supporter of my work and dreams and encourages me every day. He is always the first person with whom I share an idea or draft, and he even reads them aloud with me, taking on every role from a valley girl to a grandmother. He is a trooper! I am also greatly inspired by all the people who have joined me on my journey as a writer: the actors who have given of themselves so completely in lifting my characters from the page, the friends and family who have lent their hearts and wisdom to the development of my plays, and the many, many people who have taught me throughout my life.

NY New Works Theatre Festival: Meet Natalie Lovejoy & Deployed

Capture

Name: Natalie Lovejoy

What is your current project? Deployed

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

New York New Works Festival. It is the right fit because the festival allows us to showcase an excerpt from the show to producers and investors who will be able to take it forward for a full production. Deployed is an important piece about the effect the non-stop wars of the 21st Century has had on our troops and their families that needs to be seen by more people, and the producers on the NYNW panel have the ability to make that happen.

What’s next for you?

Hopefully Deployed getting a full production regionally or Off Broadway. I’m also currently writing three other musicals, one of which – about women in Afghanistan who dress as men – will have its first reading in the fall.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

No one person in particular, but I’ve been spending some time in Nashville lately and I’m totally inspired by the caliber of musicians and songwriters there. Their talent is pushing me to step it up and inspiring me to incorporate new styles into my musical theater sound.

NY New Works Theatre Festival: Meet Ryan Vincent Anderson & Most Likely To

Name: Ryan Vincent Anderson

What is your current project? Most Likely To

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

New York New Works Theatre Festival. This festival looks to give aspiring writers and performers a chance to be recognized by many people including an extraordinary panel of broadway producers, writers, and people of the industry who are looking to give back. It’s a great place to showcase my work since I have recently moved back to NY to kick my theater career into high gear.

What’s next for you?

The beauty and the scary things about what’s next is that it is unknown. I am currently wrapping up narration on the newest James Patterson “Alex Cross” audiobook titled Cross The Line. I hope to do more stage, TV and voice work in the near future, here in NY. I am also thirsty to travel overseas with my work.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

Honestly I think my biggest inspiration right now are the many friends and colleagues I have that are still in this business. Some of them have seen some very major successes recently from Tony awards to series regular roles on TV. Others, like myself, have seen smaller victories but, no matter what, they don’t give up, because this difficult calling of being an artist is not to be taken lightly. I am inspired by the people around me that put their head down, clench their fists, and trudge forward, despite the punches and setbacks we receive.

NY New Works Theatre Festival: Meet Amy Oestreicher & Gutless and Grateful

Gutless-Grateful-2

Name: Amy Oestreicher

What is your current project? Gutless and Grateful

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

I had always loved musical theatre and was always fascinated by how the art of song and story could be so seamlessly woven together to share a universal message and to inspire others. Coming out of a coma just as I was supposed to be entering my freshman year of college was disorienting. Suddenly, the career path that had seemed apparent to me my entire life was pushed to the wayside while I fought for my life.

Although I had lost my ability to speak for a while, I committed myself to arts that I could express – I lost myself in the world of painting and mixed media and mounted three professional art shows. The Today show heard about my story and my art, and on their segment, I met David Friedman, a kind soul and a talented composer. I approached him with the idea of working together on a cabaret act. Two years later, using excerpts from my thousands of journal entries, and (some original) songs Gutless & Grateful premiered in New York.

Theatre has always been my first love and felt like natural medium to tell my story. I had experienced years of setbacks, triumphs and frustrations in isolation. I didn’t appreciate the full scope of what I had undergone, and the impact it would have on others, until I got my story out there. As a performer, I long to connect with my community and share a message that will inspire others – that is the power of theatre. This was the first time I was telling my story in my own words as opposed to news coverage or word of mouth. It was my way of reclaiming my identity as a performer, and reclaiming the stage with an even stronger message.

Helping yourself is a reward in one respect, but to know that your own struggles can heal others is transformative and uplifting.
I’m so excited to be performing at New York New Works Theatre Festival. This is a perfect fit for me, because I’ve been touring the show for five years and it’s touched the hearts of audiences nationwide. Now, I long to take my show on an even bigger scale, and show this amazing panel when I’ve been up to!

What’s next for you?

Since it’s premiere, I’ve been performing it in theatres, hospitals, and groups in need of any kind of inspiration and encouragement. When I realized how combining powerful firsthand experience could transform lives, I developed my little-show-that-could into a mental health advocacy and sexual assault prevention program for students. Nearly losing my life at 18 years old, I’m now reaching out to students at that same pivotal point in their own lives. I hope to keep touring it internationally and eventually find a home in a small off Broadway Theatre. Hoping to tour more cities, a small extended engagement in NY, and also work on my full length drama, Imprints, which just had its first staged reading in NYC in May! Follow me and subscribe at amyoes.com for updates…

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

My older brother Matt, who is a jazz musician and so much more.. He has shown me that you can create art and be an artist, but still be successful and business savvy without “selling out.” He somehow achieves an amazing balance between work, life, play, creativity, and zen. He’s lived in India and gone on silent meditations, taught yoga, and is very into Eastern philosophy, and on the other end he’s producing up a storm with his music, he’s in the house band for Amateur Night at the Apollo in Harlem, and he’s even making his Broadway Debut in Smokey Joe’s Cafe this Fall! And he just got married! My brother Matt shows me you can do it all…while still taking care of yourself!

Meet Susanne Pinedo & And Scene…A Woman’s Journey to Walk Again

Susanne Pinedo
Susanne Pinedo

Name
: Susanne Pinedo

What is your current project?
I’m a publicist for the theatre and film industries, and am currently working on two projects. I’m doing the publicity for the documentary film, “And Scene…A Woman’s Journey to Walk Again,” produced by Casting Director and Indie Film Producer, Liz Ortiz-Mackes and her production company, I Ain’t Playin’ Films. Mrs. Ortiz-Mackes has also written a book about audition preparation for actors, “Ace Your Acting Audition, Second Edition: Using Iconic Specificity and Other Surefire Techniques” and I have the great honor of promoting it, as well.

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

One of my main focuses is to conduct as much advocacy and activism as I can through my work; social causes are very important to me. “And…Scene” is about actress and wheelchair dancer, Jamie Petrone and the narrative dives deeply into the themes of disability, diffusing stereotypes and pursuing what you love to do regardless of any obstacles. This film depicts and conveys so many important messages that are universal and I have made it my mission to help tell this story of courage and truth.

What’s next for you?

I have recently begun providing publicity consultations to voice over actors through Edge Studio, a leading training institution for the voice over industry. I’m very excited about this opportunity and look forward to this new journey.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

My mom is a constant well of inspiration and so much of what I do is fueled by her. She came to this country as a single mom and not speaking the language and was fearless. Every day she tells me to do what I believe in and makes me happy. And I do:)
