NY New Works Theatre Festival: Meet Ryan Vincent Anderson & Most Likely To

Name: Ryan Vincent Anderson

What is your current project? Most Likely To

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

New York New Works Theatre Festival. This festival looks to give aspiring writers and performers a chance to be recognized by many people including an extraordinary panel of broadway producers, writers, and people of the industry who are looking to give back. It’s a great place to showcase my work since I have recently moved back to NY to kick my theater career into high gear.

What’s next for you?

The beauty and the scary things about what’s next is that it is unknown. I am currently wrapping up narration on the newest James Patterson “Alex Cross” audiobook titled Cross The Line. I hope to do more stage, TV and voice work in the near future, here in NY. I am also thirsty to travel overseas with my work.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

Honestly I think my biggest inspiration right now are the many friends and colleagues I have that are still in this business. Some of them have seen some very major successes recently from Tony awards to series regular roles on TV. Others, like myself, have seen smaller victories but, no matter what, they don’t give up, because this difficult calling of being an artist is not to be taken lightly. I am inspired by the people around me that put their head down, clench their fists, and trudge forward, despite the punches and setbacks we receive.

Meet Laura Cetti & Imaginary

Laura Cetti (2)Name: Laura Cetti

What is your current project?

A selection from my good friend Nick Radu’s play “Imaginary” in the New York New Works Festival

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

We will be performing at The Elektra Theater in midtown. This festival is a great fit for me and Imaginary because it gives us the oppourtunity to show our work to industry professionals in hopes of getting their support and feedback.

What’s next for you?

I will be singing at Broadway Artists Connection at The Laurie Beechman Theatre on September 12th!

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?
My biggest inspiration now, as always, are my fellow actors. I just finished a new play in the Thespis Festival and I was so struck by the hard work and dedication of my castmates. We were putting in 7 hour days for 3 plus weeks and each and every one of these actors showed up ready to work and collaborate. Not one received any compensation for their time. They were all there for the satisfaction of the work and the growth and the art. That is what it’s all about and what inspires me to work hard every day.

Meet Miranda Jonte and Easter at the Entree Gold

muumuuName: Miranda Jonte
What is your current project?

Directing and producing playwright John Minigan’s EASTER AT THE ENTREE GOLD, going up at the Sam French Off Off Broadway Fest on August 9th

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

John and I have been collaborating for two years now, and he said, ‘Hey, I’m going to submit this piece again (we did the fest last year too), and can I put you down as producer again, no pressure?’ Of course we said yes. To our surprise, it got in (as playwrights we’d both gotten so many ‘nos’ this year and just assumed we’d continue the trend), and that was that. Hey Jonte!’s director, Stephen, is out of state currently, so it was either find a new director, or approach it as an opportunity to build my professional resume. So I’m directing for the first time ever. It’s terrifying. Terrifying. As for the right fit, John’s plays are fraught with gorgeous language and gorgeous conflict. His pieces are layered and so demanding, and they capture the baseness of people with so much beauty- not easy to do! We’d be crazy not to produce his work.

What’s next for you?

Worst. Question. Ever. Because I never know the answer! I think a lot of people feel as if they never know if they’re going to work or create again. I’m going to buckle down and audition my face off for the next two years- theater, film, and TV. I *also* want to turn my play ST. FRANCIS (being published this December!) into a film and film in my hometown in Northern California. There’s another play brewing in my head as well, but it hasn’t made its way past pictures and single lines in my mind’s eye. Hopefully it’ll make its way down from my head into my hands and out onto the page. I never know.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

HAHAHAHA Everyone who’s working. Or, Lake Bell, who wrote, directed, and starred in the little indie gem IN A WORLD, Joey Lauren Adams, who wrote a movie for herself, and upon realizing she needed to direct it, found an actor to replace her in the lead. (Ashley Judd starred in COME EARLY MORNING) People who create their own work, and who collaborate, and who make smart business decisions. Oh. And Ed Burns. He is the epitome of making work for himself and doing everything in his power to get it done- and being unafraid to ask for help.

Miranda Jonte was born & raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She received her MFA from the Actors Studio in New York, her BA in Theatre & German from Chico State, & studied at the University of Tuebingen, Germany. There, she played Suzanne (Picasso at the Lapin Agile), & Tracy (Seascape with Sharks and Dancer). Roles in the States include Mary (Mary Stuart), Mercy (I Am Yours), Juliet (Romeo and Juliet), Madame (The Maids), Katherine (The Secret Rapture), Kim (This Isn’t Working): FringeNYC, Amy (Refuge), & mercenary killer Danielle Bosola in the new retelling of the Duchess of Malfi, Malfi, Inc. with Milk Can Theatre Company. She decided to try her hand at creating her own work, the result being the full-length play Greasemonkey, in which she originated the role of Mara in its world premiere in NYC, Winter 2013. Greasemonkey led her to a semi-finalist position for the Princess Grace Award in playwriting. Her next play, St. Francis, premiered successfully last Spring as a one-woman show; the expanded one-act had its first public reading in Fall 2014, was a semi-finalist again for Princess Grace in 2015, and in August of the same year, debuted at New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC). St. Francis was selected to be published in Applause Books’ THE BEST PLAYS FROM AMERICAN THEATRE FESTIVALS 2015. She has also written the ten minute play All in a White Trash Pie, directed by Stephen Brotebeck. She and Stephen helmed the professional production of John Minigan’s Breaking the Shakespeare Code at the Greenhouse Theater in Chicago in June 2014. They followed up with the New York premiere of Shakespeare Code with the New York International Fringe Festival, August 2014. She played Anna in both productions. In her spare time, she does road races & mud runs, eats junk food with fervor, & watches Netflix waaaayyyyy too much.

The New York New Works Theatre Festival takes center stage from August 29th – October 5th, at the Times Square Arts Center. Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

Meet Ali Kennedy Scott & Let Them Eat Cake

Ali Kennedy Scott Headshot 04 (digital) (1280x844)Name: Ali Kennedy Scott

What is your current project?

Let Them Eat Cake: An American Love Story It is a new immersive adaptation of the Greek Tragedy, Oedipus.

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

We’ll be doing 5 performances in Oklahoma City in October 2017, followed up by a longer season in NYC in May & June 2017. Locations are currently secret to add to the mystery and intrigue of the piece. Spaces have been chosen for their ability to convey opulence and decay. Living in NYC, excess and degradation are constantly found side by side and this is at the core of the play.

What’s next for you?

I’ll be playing the Prince of Darkness in Calderon’s Two Dreams at La Mama Theatre in February 2017. I’m also in the process of writing my new solo show examining women in leadership.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

Right now in the wake of the Democratic Convention the people inspiring me are Hilary Clinton and Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama for giving the greatest speech I have ever heard. What an incredible and inspiring women! Listening to her made me excited to be alive at this time, hopeful for the future and proud to be part of the human race. And Hilary Clinton for incredible strength, tenacity, intelligence and ability to get things done. Her ability to take the knocks and keep going is something that all artists aspire to. A creative life is not necessarily an easy road, it’s a passion, it’s a calling. And it takes bravery and courage to follow it. And my goodness has Hilary Clinton been an example of bravery and courage. It staggers me that 50% of the population have never seen their gender in that level of leadership. The impact of Hilary’s nomination will be felt around the world for generations. She is changing what is possible for all of us.

Meet Roger Gonzalez & Zombie Land Long Island

481989_10151563110755336_1509489675_nName: Roger Gonzalez

What is your current project?

As an actor I am now working with BroadwayWorld best director, James Bonney and Best actor, Sean King on a really funny and well written web series called “Zombie Land Long Island.” It’s not about the kind of zombies you think, but rather about people who act and walk around your life like zombies… dead-like, lost, eating everything in its path. I have a recurring role and also help out with cinematography and marketing. Otherwise, my website LocalTheatreNY.com is absorbed now in theatre festival season. So that’s a lot right there.

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

Zombie Land New York is being produced in Smithtown and the setting is Long Island. We are in rehearsals right now. To me its a perfect fit because I have never worked with a director like Bonney. What we do in terms of real character creation is incredible to experience. He really pushes us and just being able to create my character, Martinez, is a joy. We are always laughing and the comedy seems so real and not pushed or feigned. Or acted. Martinez was originally written as this character Mangano, so I am quite thrilled that they allowed me to make him more mine.

What’s next for you?

I’ve been working on a one man play about my dreams and have been developing it with the help of Artistic New Directions. Now I have the summer to finish a draft and present it. Dreams (the actual night time REM variety) are a big part of my life and my family’s life…so its been fun.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?
On one level, and I know this might some corny to some, Deepak Chopra. I’ve re-engaged with his work and realized how much of my life centers around his work. It’s serendipity that at this stage in my life I make this realization. BUT my always inspiration in life has always been my four kids. I want to leave them as much as I can in life and I always think of them to motivate and inspire.

Meet Shellen Lubin

Screen+Shot+2015-02-22+at+4.27.01+PMMy conversation on gender parity continues with Shellen Lubin. Shellen is a powerhouse. She wears numerous hats as a Songwriter, Playwright, Director, and Vocal/Acting Coach.  She is also the Co-President of the Women in the Arts & Media Coalition, VP of Programming of the League of Professional Theatre Women, and a member of most unions and guilds in our industry, and of the National Theatre Conference.

Shellen shares about The Women in Arts & Media Coalition:

Founded in 1990 (as the New York Coalition of Professional Women in the Arts & Media, Inc.), the Women in the Arts & Media Coalition is a centralized resource for the advancement of professional women in film, theater, television and communications. Combining member organizations’ abilities and strengths in a collaborative effort, the Coalition’s mission is to empower women in these industries through advocacy, mentoring, networking, and events. Members include many of the unions and guilds in our industry, as well as larger and smaller organizations dedicated to the advancement of women.

There are a number of benefits of being a member of the Women in the Arts & Media Coalition, starting with being part of a movement promoting parity and diversity in our industry. Membership in the Coalition is not by individuals, but by organizations, and is determined by the size of membership. Full Member Organizations have the greatest number of individual members and include unions and guilds, such as Local 802 AFM, Actors’ Equity Association, Dramatists Guild, SAG-AFTRA, Stage Directors and Choreographers, Writers Guild of America East, and organizations like the League of Professional Theatre Women, New York Women in Film and Television, and New York Women in Communications. Affiliate members include the International Center for Women Playwrights, the Women’s Media Center, Women Make Movies, Women in Music, the Drama Desk, and The National Theatre Conference, to name but a few.  Last year a new membership category for academic institutions emerged with The School of Visual Arts becoming the first academic affiliate. All together, the organizational membership totals more than 100,000 women and men.

The Coalition often co-produces events with its member orgs. Member orgs are not only able to help with the design and follow-through of these programs, the Coalition is also available to help with any events from its member orgs that are of particular interest or value to women. If any one of our organizations offers a discount to the broad Coalition membership, the Coalition will publicize those events in their newsletter, calendar, and blog. Additionally, the Coalition is always interested in creating a Cross Meet and Greet between member orgs who are interested in having their membership network with each other. Our last such Meet and Greet was a three-way jam-packed networking event at WGAE with NYWIFT and WMM.

The Coalition offers a huge number of valuable resources on their website.

One useful resource is the Women in the Arts & Media Communal Calendar, which lists all events of interest for women, arts, and media, and is becoming the place to look for events, and to schedule in advance and check for conflicts. As a member of Local 802,, you are a member of The Coalition and are invited to all the events, awards galas, and networking opportunities listed there (unless they are listed as blackout dates only).

Go to http://www.womenartsmediacoalition.org/communal-calendar/ to learn about upcoming events and openings of interest.

Newer projects include: the Studies page, http://www.womenartsmediacoalition.org/studies/, an extensive database with links to Studies around the world on gender representation in theatre, film, and television.

For those seeking funding, residencies and opportunities to submit original work, go to http://www.womenartsmediacoalition.org/opportunities/ for both  #StageOpps and #ScreenOpps newsletters.

Last fall the Coalition spearheaded a Percolating Gender Parity in Theatre summit, bringing organizations together from the Coalition and beyond, from around the world, to share and coordinate efforts. A Percolating Gender Parity in Music summit is planned for Fall 2016 and Gender Parity in Media for Spring 2017..

The Coalition also shares news and information from all its member orgs and other organizations of interest on their blog and on facebook and Twitter. Anything any member org has to publicize that would be of interest to sister organizations in the Coalition can be shared by any and all of those means.

The Coalition also sponsors two Signature events, usually one each year in rotation.  The first is The Collaboration Awards, which honor professional women in the arts and media from different specializations working collaboratively on the creation of new work. The award recognizes the best of these collaborations. The last Collaboration Awards Gala in 2015 celebrated honorees in the disciplines of playwriting, songwriting, filmmaking, and directing. The winners were playwright T.D. Mitchell and director Sheryl Kaller for QUEENS FOR A YEAR which will be premiering at Hartford Stage in Fall 2016.

The other Signature event for which the Women in the Arts & Media Coalition is known is VintAge, which celebrates older women, and what is possible both in their representation and in their employment. In 2014, The Coalition granted the 1st Elsa Rael VintAge Award, for advocacy of women aging in the arts and media, presented by Tisa Chang to Morgan Jenness for her work on behalf of the playwright Maria Irene Fornes.

The Women in the Arts & Media Coalition’s combined membership is larger and more diverse than that of any other alliance of women in the arts and/or media. As a resource for professional development and social exchange, and as a force for the voice and vision of women working towards parity and diversity in the arts and media, the Coalition is a continually expanding force to be reckoned with. It is a wonderful resource from which we hope you will benefit.

Meet Felicia Lin

FeliciaLin_4538

My conversation on gender parity continues with Felicia Lin who is a Taiwanese American writer. The diaspora of her parents’ generation and Taiwan’s international isolation, have fueled her interest in Taiwan. In 2001, she left New York to live in Taiwan, where a creative breakthrough led her to pursue a career as a writer. Metropolicks, the first book she has co-written, is a romantic comedy novel. Currently she is working on the memoir of Su Beng, a Taiwanese revolutionary, activist and historian.

Here’s her take on the publishing world:

As far as the publishing industry goes, it is a female dominated industry, i.e. there are more women working in the field of publishing than men. However the majority of book reviewers and authors reviewed are men.

Here are some of the statistics from the field of literature and publishing that I referred to while on the panel:

1) According to a Publishers Weekly salary survey in 2010, 85% of publishing employees with less than three years of experience are women

2) Here’s a link to data gathered by VIDA Women in Literary Arts which shows a breakdown of the number of men and women in the categories of authors reviewed and book reviewers: http://www.vidaweb.org/the-count-2010/

Out of 40 charts, women outnumbered men on only two of them.

This New Republic article takes a closer look at what’s behind these numbers: https://newrepublic.com/article/82930/vida-women-writers-magazines-book-reviews

The New Republic article states: At Harper’s, there were 27 male book reviewers and six female; about 69 percent of the books reviewed were by male authors. At the London Review of Books, men wrote 78 percent of the reviews and 74 percent of the books reviewed. Men made up 84 percent of the reviewers for The New York Review of Books and authored 83 percent of the books reviewed.

3) As for self-publishing, this Guardian article indicates that self-publishing allows women to break through the glass ceiling of the book industry.

The article also states that according to a report from online publishing platform FicShelf, the authors doing best in the medium tend to be women.

The man whose biography I’m working on, Su Beng (he’s a nonagenarian Taiwanese revolutionary) was a very strong supporter of Tsai Ing-wen, who is the first woman be elected to be the President of Taiwan. She was elected on January 16th and she even mentioned Su Beng in one of her acceptance speeches. I wrote about this on my blog about Su Beng here: http://aboutsubeng.com/blog/2016/1/16/11616-tsai-ing-wen-elected-as-the-next-president-of-taiwan. I’m attaching the photo of Su Beng ad Tsai Ing-wen that appears in that blog post.
