fringeNYC 2016 Recap #3

HONOURConfessionsofaMumbaiCourtesan16-4690

Honour: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan by Dipti Mehta; Directed by Mark Cirnigliaro

I recently saw Born into Brothels about on the red light district in the the slums of India and was completely taken aback. I wasn’t surprised that there was prostitution because that would be naive, but there was a part of me that hoped that this issue wouldn’t be a part of my culture. For a culture that created the Kama Sutra and tantric sex, tonight’s performance reminded me that many a girl/woman/matriarch has to be a queen to many kings in one night especially if that is your destiny.

Dipti Mehta bravely writes and performs Honour: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan which tells the story of a young girl, Rani, who dreams of a life beyond the sex industry and her mother who has secured her next station in life for a good price. Mehta seamlessly moves through her characters to  tell us the story through her mother, her father, a pundit, the neighbor, and a pimp (amongst others). In typical Indian fashion, Mehta incorporates traditional and Bollywood dancing as part of the narrative through her many characters.

Though I loved the bilingual aspect, the mix of Hindi and English pulled me out of the show at times. My own Hindi is rudimentary and very basic. Actually, I should just admit I don’t speak Hindi at all. I also yearned for a set to transport us to the “Fuck Lane” so we could grasp a sense of location and poverty.

That being said, I enjoyed the performance and seeing an Indian actress on the stage. I appreciated Mehta bringing attention to the sex industry. To learn more about her efforts with Apne Aap, an international aid organization dedicated to the saving of young girls from sex trade, visit www.apneaap.org.

Photo by Tiffany FarleyName: Megan Minutillo

What is your current project?  H…

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

I wrote this play, and will be directing it as part of the JTD Lab at Guild Hall of East Hampton.

What’s next for you?

H at Guild Hall. After that? I can’t say YET, but it’ll be great!

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

Lin Manuel Miranda. He too started as a substitute teacher, but didn’t give up on his dream of creating. He expands and pushes the limits of theatre in a way that inspires generations of the past, present, and future.

Meet Laura Cetti & Imaginary

Laura Cetti (2)Name: Laura Cetti

What is your current project?

A selection from my good friend Nick Radu’s play “Imaginary” in the New York New Works Festival

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

We will be performing at The Elektra Theater in midtown. This festival is a great fit for me and Imaginary because it gives us the oppourtunity to show our work to industry professionals in hopes of getting their support and feedback.

What’s next for you?

I will be singing at Broadway Artists Connection at The Laurie Beechman Theatre on September 12th!

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?
My biggest inspiration now, as always, are my fellow actors. I just finished a new play in the Thespis Festival and I was so struck by the hard work and dedication of my castmates. We were putting in 7 hour days for 3 plus weeks and each and every one of these actors showed up ready to work and collaborate. Not one received any compensation for their time. They were all there for the satisfaction of the work and the growth and the art. That is what it’s all about and what inspires me to work hard every day.

Meet Miranda Jonte and Easter at the Entree Gold

muumuuName: Miranda Jonte
What is your current project?

Directing and producing playwright John Minigan’s EASTER AT THE ENTREE GOLD, going up at the Sam French Off Off Broadway Fest on August 9th

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

John and I have been collaborating for two years now, and he said, ‘Hey, I’m going to submit this piece again (we did the fest last year too), and can I put you down as producer again, no pressure?’ Of course we said yes. To our surprise, it got in (as playwrights we’d both gotten so many ‘nos’ this year and just assumed we’d continue the trend), and that was that. Hey Jonte!’s director, Stephen, is out of state currently, so it was either find a new director, or approach it as an opportunity to build my professional resume. So I’m directing for the first time ever. It’s terrifying. Terrifying. As for the right fit, John’s plays are fraught with gorgeous language and gorgeous conflict. His pieces are layered and so demanding, and they capture the baseness of people with so much beauty- not easy to do! We’d be crazy not to produce his work.

What’s next for you?

Worst. Question. Ever. Because I never know the answer! I think a lot of people feel as if they never know if they’re going to work or create again. I’m going to buckle down and audition my face off for the next two years- theater, film, and TV. I *also* want to turn my play ST. FRANCIS (being published this December!) into a film and film in my hometown in Northern California. There’s another play brewing in my head as well, but it hasn’t made its way past pictures and single lines in my mind’s eye. Hopefully it’ll make its way down from my head into my hands and out onto the page. I never know.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

HAHAHAHA Everyone who’s working. Or, Lake Bell, who wrote, directed, and starred in the little indie gem IN A WORLD, Joey Lauren Adams, who wrote a movie for herself, and upon realizing she needed to direct it, found an actor to replace her in the lead. (Ashley Judd starred in COME EARLY MORNING) People who create their own work, and who collaborate, and who make smart business decisions. Oh. And Ed Burns. He is the epitome of making work for himself and doing everything in his power to get it done- and being unafraid to ask for help.

She received her MFA from the Actors Studio in New York, her BA in Theatre & German from Chico State, & studied at the University of Tuebingen, Germany. There, she played Suzanne (Picasso at the Lapin Agile), & Tracy (Seascape with Sharks and Dancer). Roles in the States include Mary (Mary Stuart), Mercy (I Am Yours), Juliet (Romeo and Juliet), Madame (The Maids), Katherine (The Secret Rapture), Kim (This Isn’t Working): FringeNYC, Amy (Refuge), & mercenary killer Danielle Bosola in the new retelling of the Duchess of Malfi, Malfi, Inc. with Milk Can Theatre Company. She decided to try her hand at creating her own work, the result being the full-length play Greasemonkey, in which she originated the role of Mara in its world premiere in NYC, Winter 2013. Greasemonkey led her to a semi-finalist position for the Princess Grace Award in playwriting. Her next play, St. Francis, premiered successfully last Spring as a one-woman show; the expanded one-act had its first public reading in Fall 2014, was a semi-finalist again for Princess Grace in 2015, and in August of the same year, debuted at New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC). St. Francis was selected to be published in Applause Books’ THE BEST PLAYS FROM AMERICAN THEATRE FESTIVALS 2015. She has also written the ten minute play All in a White Trash Pie, directed by Stephen Brotebeck. She and Stephen helmed the professional production of John Minigan’s Breaking the Shakespeare Code at the Greenhouse Theater in Chicago in June 2014. They followed up with the New York premiere of Shakespeare Code with the New York International Fringe Festival, August 2014. She played Anna in both productions. In her spare time, she does road races & mud runs, eats junk food with fervor, & watches Netflix waaaayyyyy too much.

NYNW 2016 POSTERName: Abby Judd

What is your current project?

General Manager – The New York New Works Theatre Festival 2016

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

The New York New Works Theatre Festival takes center stage from August 29th – October 5th, at the Times Square Arts Center. Exposing talented writers to enthralled audiences, and a panel of Broadway Producers, Emmy and Tony Award Winners, it was only natural to choose an Off-Broadway theatre in the heart of New York’s Theatre District, the theatre capital of the world!

What’s next for you?

My agency, Bear In Mind Creative, is working with an multi-award winning film writer to produce and brand his latest project!

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

I have two: My business partner, Melissa Gordon. Every time I present her with a challenge she comes back with something which exceeds anything I could have imagined. Her mind works beautifully. She is so creative and loving, it delights me every day. Kenny Bell, the booking manager at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. He genuinely cares about every performer who walks through his doors, and is so supportive of developing great art and talent. He’s made his theatre a home. Working with him is an honor.

Meet Ali Kennedy Scott & Let Them Eat Cake

Ali Kennedy Scott Headshot 04 (digital) (1280x844)Name: Ali Kennedy Scott

What is your current project?

Let Them Eat Cake: An American Love Story It is a new immersive adaptation of the Greek Tragedy, Oedipus.

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

We’ll be doing 5 performances in Oklahoma City in October 2017, followed up by a longer season in NYC in May & June 2017. Locations are currently secret to add to the mystery and intrigue of the piece. Spaces have been chosen for their ability to convey opulence and decay. Living in NYC, excess and degradation are constantly found side by side and this is at the core of the play.

What’s next for you?

I’ll be playing the Prince of Darkness in Calderon’s Two Dreams at La Mama Theatre in February 2017. I’m also in the process of writing my new solo show examining women in leadership.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

Right now in the wake of the Democratic Convention the people inspiring me are Hilary Clinton and Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama for giving the greatest speech I have ever heard. What an incredible and inspiring women! Listening to her made me excited to be alive at this time, hopeful for the future and proud to be part of the human race. And Hilary Clinton for incredible strength, tenacity, intelligence and ability to get things done. Her ability to take the knocks and keep going is something that all artists aspire to. A creative life is not necessarily an easy road, it’s a passion, it’s a calling. And it takes bravery and courage to follow it. And my goodness has Hilary Clinton been an example of bravery and courage. It staggers me that 50% of the population have never seen their gender in that level of leadership. The impact of Hilary’s nomination will be felt around the world for generations. She is changing what is possible for all of us.

Meet Roger Gonzalez & Zombie Land Long Island

481989_10151563110755336_1509489675_nName: Roger Gonzalez

What is your current project?

As an actor I am now working with BroadwayWorld best director, James Bonney and Best actor, Sean King on a really funny and well written web series called “Zombie Land Long Island.” It’s not about the kind of zombies you think, but rather about people who act and walk around your life like zombies… dead-like, lost, eating everything in its path. I have a recurring role and also help out with cinematography and marketing. Otherwise, my website LocalTheatreNY.com is absorbed now in theatre festival season. So that’s a lot right there.

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

Zombie Land New York is being produced in Smithtown and the setting is Long Island. We are in rehearsals right now. To me its a perfect fit because I have never worked with a director like Bonney. What we do in terms of real character creation is incredible to experience. He really pushes us and just being able to create my character, Martinez, is a joy. We are always laughing and the comedy seems so real and not pushed or feigned. Or acted. Martinez was originally written as this character Mangano, so I am quite thrilled that they allowed me to make him more mine.

What’s next for you?

I’ve been working on a one man play about my dreams and have been developing it with the help of Artistic New Directions. Now I have the summer to finish a draft and present it. Dreams (the actual night time REM variety) are a big part of my life and my family’s life…so its been fun.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?
On one level, and I know this might some corny to some, Deepak Chopra. I’ve re-engaged with his work and realized how much of my life centers around his work. It’s serendipity that at this stage in my life I make this realization. BUT my always inspiration in life has always been my four kids. I want to leave them as much as I can in life and I always think of them to motivate and inspire.

Harvey: Meet Cecilia Vaicels

Cecilia Pro HeadshotName: Cecilia Vaicels

Character: Veta Simmons

Why did you want to be a part of this production?
Harvey is such a great show and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work with Mary Lynch and Jim Haines again. Once I met the other actors involved, I knew I made the right choice. What talented people! Rehearsals are a joy … work but fun with a group of people who truly work well together and respect each other. I love the role of Veta. She truly tries to do her best for her brother and daughter. Does it push her over the edge? Well, you’ll have to come and see.

What’s next for you?
Once this show closes, I will start rehearsals for Isle of Shoals Productions’ original musical “Occupation: Dragonslayer” running September 8th through the 25th at the Robert Moss Theater, 440 Lafayette Street, Manhattan. The show is a musical fable that takes place in a doomed diner at Ground Zero on Christmas Eve a year after 9/11, as a mysterious stranger, a firefighter who’s lost his memory, challenges a real estate profiteer cashing in on the tragedy and restores hope to all within. I play Harriet who is the manager of the diner. Since this is the 15th anniversary of 9/11, I feel that performing this particular show, at this particular time, is a way to honor those we lost that day and those who worked so hard down at Ground Zero. For information on “Occupation: Dragonslayer” and how to get tickets go to http://www.isleofshoals.org.

I will also be performing as Lady Alice More in “A Man for All Seasons” on November 18th, 19th and 20th in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy Church, 70-01 Kessel Street, Forest Hills, NY. For tickets and information, call the Rectory at 718-268-6143.

What’s your favorite animal and what is its name?
I have two in my past. My dog, Skeeter, who seriously thought she was human and my cockateil, Finster, who would whistle along as I practiced for musicals. Well…then there’s Harvey. The jury’s still out on him!

Cecilia Vaicels began acting 26 years ago in community theatre. She has progressed to Off-off Broadway with Isle of Shoals Productions. Off-off Broadway credits include: “That Lady from Maxim’s” (originated role of Gabrielle Petypon/NYMF), “Café Coward” (World Premier originated role of Elsa Maxwell and Long Island Premier as Lynne Fontanne), “Lighthouse” (Evangeline Pratt), “Our Town” (Mrs. Webb), “Still Life” (Myrtle Baggot), “Idiot’s Delight” (Senora Rossi), “an intimate eve with Will & Chris” (various Shakesperian characters) and “Suddenly Last Summer” (Sr. Felicity). Other credits include: “Rags” (Landlady), “The Wizard of Oz” (Almira Gultch/Wicked Witch), “Kiss of the Spiderwoman” (Molina’s Mother), “Into the Woods” (Granny/Giant/Cinderella’s mother), “Fiddler on the Roof” (once as Golda, once as Fruma Sarah), “Annie” (Sophie the Kettle/Mrs. Greer/Connie Boylan), “Little Shop of Horrors” (Puppeteer/Audrey II) and many more. She has appeared in independent films, most recently as Jessica’s Mom in “Dumped”, and even a rap video! Many thanks to my husband, Charlie, and my daughter, Lauren, for all their love and support and to God for my talent! http://www.CeciliaVaicels.com

Harvey: An Oldie but A Goodie – Opens 7/14

I rarely act these days. I tend to be behind the scenes – producing, publicizing, directing – enjoying the magic created by artists. I believe it takes courage to get on a stage and bare your soul.

“Art is prayer is love is creation is expression.” I came up with that gem some years ago. My personal prayer to the theatre gods who keep my passion burning for this art form. So when the opportunity presented itself, I thought to myself that it might be time to audition for a show. The opportunity presented itself through my dear friend and one of my actresses, Mary Lynch. Mary has one of my actresses for 13 years. She played M’Lynn in Steel Magnolias, my first professional gig. I was a young director finishing grad school; newly married; new to Queens theatre. She and I just connected and I directed her in at least 5 plays including Torch Song Trilogy and Plaza Suite.

Now she is the director and I follow her vision. Harvey is a wonderful play. Yes, it is dated in some spots but there’s this innocence under the comedy that I find delicious. I am playing Nurse Kelly with an amazing cast. All we do in rehearsal is laugh and work. And eat. We enjoy eating very much.

I would like you to meet these extraordinary folks. I am putting them in the limelight as we get ready to open 🙂

See you at the show!

Guest Blogger Nick Radu Reviews Bedroom Farce

Bedroom Farce

If you’re looking for a good time, a good show and a few good laughs you need only go as far as the bedroom; or three bedrooms, as it is in Alan Ayckbourn’s Bedroom Farce. Under the creative and talented eye of director Andrew Block, the title and the performances do not disappoint when it comes to comedic farce.  The entire play takes place in three separate bedrooms, owned by three of the four couples in the play.  Ian McDonald did a spectacular job of creating the space, with three full beds, as well as walls and doors and other nooks and crannies to differentiate the playing spaces. But it’s Block’s clever blocking that keeps this play moving, and from becoming a giant mess of beds vs people.

Trevor and Susannah, played by Simon Pearl and Alexandra O’Daly, respectively, are a couple whose marriage is on the rocks, and everyone else knows about it.  These two actors have great chemistry as they battle it out in the most awkward of places; other people’s bedrooms.

Trevor’s parents, played by Viki Boyle and Mitch Giannunzio, give us a wonderful insight into married life during middle age.  They seem to have the experience and the answers, but we are privileged to watch these playful actors as their true colors come out when they’re forced to deal with unmentionable topics.

Nick, played by John Gazzale, makes us all cringe as the bed-ridden character agonizing over a slipped disc.  We have the joy of watching his wife, Jan, played by Mel House, deal with her husband’s pleasantries during this crazy romp.  The two have the best moment in the play as these great physical actors give the audience their money’s worth!

In fact, the entire cast has wonderful comedic timing, but the scene stealers are clearly Joscelyne Wilmouth, playing Kate, and Toby MacDonald, playing her husband, Malcolm. These two have it all: chemistry, timing, physicality, you name it.  MacDonald has such a great take-charge way about him, while still being adorably funny.  Wilmouth shows the most range as she interacts with the other characters and deals with her own bedroom shenanigans.

Stop down to the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church and catch one of the remaining performances of Bedroom Farce. You’re in for a treat!
