Review: Love Alone

My journey to Enfield, NH led me to the Shaker Bridge Theatre where they produced Deborah Salem-Smith’s Love Alone. Nestled in this quiet and sweet town, a story of death and grief and how the parties involved navigate their lives unfolds.

The play opens with Dr. Becca Neal, an anesthesiologist, breaking the news of the death of Helen’s partner of twenty years during a routine operation. The play delves into the lives of these two women and how they try to manage through the malpractice suit, their families, and moving forward. These two strong leads, Qurrat Kadwani, and Suzanne Dudley-Schon, open the play with high stakes but sadly never interact again. Regardless, they lead their story lines with command and emotional gravitas. Kadwani dances the fine line of balancing the loss of her first patient and the ramifications of that onto her personal interactions. Dudley-Schon’s performance is a truthful portrayal of the stages of grief allowing us to feel it with her. Supported by a strong ensemble, Jaime Schwarz’s Clementine (Helen’s daughter) brings light to a dark situation. Ben Roberts plays the distraught husband of Becca whose own needs aren’t being met. Leah Romano covers three roles – each with their own distinct character. Mike Blackman’s plays the attorney who rigorously fights for the deceased and her family.

Set in the thrust playing space, the action takes place in various locations (two living rooms, a waiting room, parking lot, etc.) which all encompass the space at the same time. A complicated play that was brilliantly staged by director, Richard Waterhouse, the scenes weave in out of each other and at times simultaneously occur. The transitions therefore were seamless allowing the story to move quickly and keep the audience’s focus.

The show has two more performances. If you’re in Enfield or in a neighboring town, be sure to see it before it closes.

The Convent of St Clare. Abortion, lesbians, a holier than thou mother superior, a  priest and a determined fiancee all make this story not your grandmother’s Catholic Church. “The Convent Of St Clare” a new dramedy debuts in the Thespis Festival at Hudson Guild  Theatre this fall. NY New Works Theatre Festival: Meet Mara Lee Gilbert & Protect the Children

Name: Mara Lee Gilbert

What is your current project?

I have written and am starring in a new one-act play! Protect the Children is a tense two-hander exploring how we use fantasy as a coping mechanism in a world that can be quite cruel: Kendra protects precious collateral for those who’ve made criminal deals they weren’t prepared to handle and now her world is falling apart. How much will she let is crumble and burn as she faces down her perceived adversary, Simon, over who gets to keep his daughter? Will she end her life of secrecy and fantasy or begin creating a new fantasy? It begs the questions, When is it time to snap back to reality? Or is reality simply what we make it? And are any of us ever actually protected? The play also stars Alfredo Diaz of All My Children, The Affair, and the new feature film, Lucky, premiering at the UrbanWorld Film Festival in September. It is Directed by Sarah Doudna of the New York City Opera Company, and features music by Richard Padron, who’s composed for and played with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Bronx Arts Ensemble, Lauryn Hill and Paquito D’Rivera.

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

It will be showcased as part of the New York New Works Theatre Festival 2016 on August 31st! This is my second year showcasing with the festival and I truly love it! It really serves the artists in growing their networks with the right people who can either mentor them or directly help them advance to the next level in their careers. I was one of the six finalists last year with my play, Passage, (dealing with the topic of euthanasia and feeling complete as a human being), and I was mentored into expanding it to a full length piece and working towards getting it Off-Broadway! I’m really looking forward to what comes from this year’s experience! You can read about the festival here: http://www.NYNWTheatreFestival.com

What’s next for you?

I will continue working towards getting Passage Off-Broadway, as well as screening my award-winning short film, What’s Left (exploring forgiveness), and looking into developing that into a feature-length film. And of course, seeing how far Protect the Children goes on in the competition! I love exploring the darker realms of humanity where we often don’t want to look and the power of the choices we make in our lives; choices that can lead us towards peace and redemption or further into the dark. I like to explore darkness without judgement and with compassion.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

I’d have to say my boyfriend and musician, Richard Padron, who’s music I have used for my last three projects. He has told me, “The Universe rewards you when you are bold.” He’s an extraordinarily talented guitarist and composer with a powerful drive to create and be successful. He puts his heart fully into all of his work and creates opportunities for himself. He inspires me to keep going, live life on the edge of my passion, be on the top of my game and always do my best. Lance Ringel’s play In Love with the Arrow Collar Man will receive its world premiere on September 7 at the New York New Works Theatre Festival. Ringel was principal writer of two theater pieces created for Vassar College. Vassar Voices, a staged reading highlighting 150 years of the college’s history, premiered at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The cast featured Meryl Streep, Lisa Kudrow and Frances Sternhagen. It toured across America and to London. At Home in the World, directed by John Caird, spotlights talented young performers. It has been staged in Japan, Uganda and America to sold-out houses. Collaborating with director-actor-composer Chuck Muckle (his spouse of 40 years), Ringel wrote Animal Story, a short musical for young audiences that received its New York premiere earlier this year. Ringel’s reputation as a writer of gay historical fiction was established with the critical acclaim accorded his 2014 novel Flower of Iowa (Smashwords), about an American and British soldier in World War I who fall in love. Kirkus Reviews called it “accomplished, touching historical fiction,” adding, “Ringel packs a remarkable amount of flavor and detail into this debut work.” Actor, author and director Stephen Fry tweeted, “Reading a truly wonderful WW1 novel. … So truthful and touching.” Ringel and Muckle divide their time between New York City and Poughkeepsie.
