What is your current project?

Lenny Bruce is Not Afraid

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

I’m currently producing for my friend Mark at Studio 353, West 48th Street. He has some subtle and not-so-subtle references to this year and the election, as well as a different take on the exploration of relationships. It fits with some of my personal attitudes and I both enjoy and have performed some very dark roles, so I compliment the team well.

Review: The Other Mozart with Jody Christopherson

“I’m only my brother’s pupil.”

Once upon time before my foray into theatre, I was a singer who studied music and eventually majored in music for 2 years before I realized that it wasn’t my calling. My inspiration: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He’s my favorite composer. He’s brilliant.

I was sad that I missed The Other Mozart when it premiered last year especially since I was in the audience when the creator and performer, Sylvia Milo, and her team, won two New York Innovative Theatre Awards. So when I learned that it was being reprised with fellow indie theatre artist, Jody Christopherson, I was getting to The Players!

I wasn’t disappointed. It was worth the wait. The Other Mozart is about the sister of Amadeus, Nannerl Mozart, a virtuoso and accomplished composer in her own right whose story was lost to the annals of time. The solo performance art piece is set in and on a majestic and imperial 18-foot dress which fills the stage. It is on and in this dress, that Jody Christopherson beautifully and poignantly engages the audience with this haunting story of Nannerl’s life: the talented sister who accompanied her genius brother on tour throughout Western Europe; the daughter who was both praised and subjugated as well as touted and urged to be domesticated by her parents; the wife who became a baroness to raise his children and then hers in the wilderness.

Under the flawless direction of Isaac Byrne, the music created by Nathan Davis and Phyllis Chen supported the narrative laid out by Christopherson. The costume designs by Magdalena Dabrowaka and Miodrag Guberinic are art pieces and will inspire any artist who sees this show.

For me, I wish I knew about Nannerl when I was growing up. Instead of writing an essay on Mozart, I wrote a 20 page poem based on his life when I was in high school. My recollection of her being mentioned all those years ago are vague. And how apropos and timely this piece is in the climate we are enduring. A feminist manifesto of how it was for women and how fortunate we are today.

Meet Christin Eve Cato & El Coqui Espectacular and The Bottle of Doom

Name: Christin Eve Cato

What is your current project?

El Coqui Espectacular and The Bottle of Doom

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

The Julia de Burgos Center for Culture & Performing Arts in El Barrio. This neighborhood is so fitting for the play since it is composed of a large Latino demographic and is right now the center of the gentrifying buzz. The play highlights Latino identity in America, gentrification in NYC, and how the media contributes to these factors.

What’s next for you?

I am working on a couple of web-series: “Meet” & “Slayer”. I will also be developing a children’s book series, “Callaloo”, to have it’s theatrical production debut, “Callaloo Live”, in NYC!

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

My biggest inspiration are my peers right now. I am so lucky to belong to a community of artists that are constantly challenging me, creating with me, and developing work with me. Together, we are inspiring each other to do more and make a difference. Having and belonging to a community is so integral for our souls, our creativity, and most importantly, our Art.

Meet Matt Barbot & El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom

Name: Matt Barbot

What is your current project?

A production of my play, El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

It’s an honor to bring this play, which is so much about cultural identity and struggling to find a place, to the Julia de Burgos Art Center. The center is named for the Puerto Rican poet, and is located in East Harlem, a historic center of Nuyorican culture.

What’s next for you?

Working on my thesis for Columbia School of the Arts with my mentor, Kristoffer Diaz.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

My biggest inspiration right in this moment is the cast and crew of this show. As a playwright, it’s always humbling to see a whole team of great artists come together to bring my story to life. Aside from that, I’ve been catching up on reading Maria Irene Fornés.

Review: Such Nice Shoes

such nice shoes-9.jpgThere are times when I walk into a theatre not really wanting to see my own life on stage. However, watching a day in the life of Christine Renee Miller, actually made me feel grateful for the life I have and how important it is for us to use this platform to share our stories. Miller is known in the theatre circles as Emmy winner, Matt Hoverman’s collaborator for their Go-Solo Classes. The solo shows that have been produced from their classes have been moving and successful. This show is no different. Miller magnificently and smoothly transitions through no less than 10 characters that she encounters in one day. We meet the sassy homeless woman who kicks off Miller’s day in the early morning to the Indian palm reader to the sexist yoga client. Staged in Theater Lab’s white space with Lianne Arnold’s projections and Kia Rogers’ lighting design to support locations, director Andrea Dantas creatively and poignantly questions us: “Does New York chew us up and spits us out and how do we handle the outcome?”

Meet Ashley Jacobson & Elizabeth Sarkady and SEX

maeweststartsonjailterm_1_orig.jpgName: Ashley Jacobson (Artistic Director) and Elizabeth Sarkady (Executive Director)

What is your current project?

A staged reading of SEX by Mae West. It was her first Broadway play and the one for which she was incarcerated for 10-days for lewdness and “corrupting the youth.” The play is the story of a prostitute from Montreal who struggles to find her way in and out of sex work.

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

We are performing it at UNDER Saint Marks Theater, as part of our residency with FRIGID New York @ Horse Trade. The theater has a distinct downtown feel, as its underground and feels almost like a speakeasy. This is so perfect for a show produced during the Prohibition Era, where censorship was so brazen and artists could be arrested for the content of the work. We hope people will enjoy feeling like they are sneaking in to see something taboo.

What’s next for you?

We have a devised show called THE BRITNEY PROJECT that will open on January 4th at the Kraine Theater. The show’s tagline is: A look into what Britney Spears did to pop culture, and what pop culture did to Britney Spears. Its a highly satired look at pop culture’s obsession with and exploitation of celebrities, particularly young females, as explored through the very public rise and breakdown of America’s most famous pop princess.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

Definitely Mae West! What a soul she was! We are so inspired by her self-made career. She created the roles she wanted for herself and defined her sexuality on her own terms. She used stereotypes to exploit them and to reveal them as shallow. She was unapologetically fabulous and bold, but also caring and philanthropic. She was a real trailblazer for women in theater and on screen, and we are proud to showcase her work.

What is your current project?

The Convent of St Clare. Abortion, lesbians, a holier than thou mother superior, a  priest and a determined fiancee all make this story not your grandmother’s Catholic Church. “The Convent Of St Clare” a new dramedy debuts in the Thespis Festival at Hudson Guild  Theatre this fall. Come see how all is crumbling under the weight of changing times and unconventional habits. The cast features two actors, Amy Losi and Kalen J. NY New Works Theatre Festival: Meet Tasha Nicole Partee & In a Vision, or in None

Name: Tasha Nicole Partee

What is your current project?

A new drama with comedy called In a Vision, or in None

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

The play is making its world premiere at the New York New Works Theatre Festival on August 31st! I am really excited for the piece to take its first steps with the amazingly supportive and talented artists involved in this festival. In fact, it was the positive experiences of past participants that initially inspired me to submit to NYNWTF. Ultimately, I’d like to expand this short play into a full-length piece, but my hope is that it will provide a thought-provoking, meaningful experience to NYNW Theatre Festival audiences in its current form.

What’s next for you?

It has been an exciting and busy summer. I am about to wrap up a run of my first full-length play, Mrs. Schrodinger’s Cat, in the New York International Fringe Festival, while at the same time preparing In a Vision, or in None for its debut with NYNWTF. I am really looking forward to setting some time aside for processing the tremendous learning that has taken place through these experiences. I would like to think the end of the festivals does not mean the end of the road for the work. I plan to seek a mentor in playwriting and continue developing them!
Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

My husband Peter is my biggest inspiration. He has been the greatest supporter of my work and dreams and encourages me every day. He is always the first person with whom I share an idea or draft, and he even reads them aloud with me, taking on every role from a valley girl to a grandmother. He is a trooper! I am also greatly inspired by all the people who have joined me on my journey as a writer: the actors who have given of themselves so completely in lifting my characters from the page, the friends and family who have lent their hearts and wisdom to the development of my plays, and the many, many people who have taught me throughout my life.

NY New Works Theatre Festival: Meet Natalie Lovejoy & Deployed

Capture

Name: Natalie Lovejoy

What is your current project? Deployed

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

New York New Works Festival. It is the right fit because the festival allows us to showcase an excerpt from the show to producers and investors who will be able to take it forward for a full production. Deployed is an important piece about the effect the non-stop wars of the 21st Century has had on our troops and their families that needs to be seen by more people, and the producers on the NYNW panel have the ability to make that happen.

What’s next for you?

Hopefully Deployed getting a full production regionally or Off Broadway. I’m also currently writing three other musicals, one of which – about women in Afghanistan who dress as men – will have its first reading in the fall.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?

No one person in particular, but I’ve been spending some time in Nashville lately and I’m totally inspired by the caliber of musicians and songwriters there. Their talent is pushing me to step it up and inspiring me to incorporate new styles into my musical theater sound.

Meet Roger Gonzalez & Zombie Land Long Island

481989_10151563110755336_1509489675_nName: Roger Gonzalez

What is your current project?

As an actor I am now working with BroadwayWorld best director, James Bonney and Best actor, Sean King on a really funny and well written web series called “Zombie Land Long Island.” It’s not about the kind of zombies you think, but rather about people who act and walk around your life like zombies… dead-like, lost, eating everything in its path. I have a recurring role and also help out with cinematography and marketing. Otherwise, my website LocalTheatreNY.com is absorbed now in theatre festival season. So that’s a lot right there.

Where are you performing it and why is it the right fit for your piece?

Zombie Land New York is being produced in Smithtown and the setting is Long Island. We are in rehearsals right now. To me its a perfect fit because I have never worked with a director like Bonney. What we do in terms of real character creation is incredible to experience. He really pushes us and just being able to create my character, Martinez, is a joy. We are always laughing and the comedy seems so real and not pushed or feigned. Or acted. Martinez was originally written as this character Mangano, so I am quite thrilled that they allowed me to make him more mine.

What’s next for you?

I’ve been working on a one man play about my dreams and have been developing it with the help of Artistic New Directions. Now I have the summer to finish a draft and present it. Dreams (the actual night time REM variety) are a big part of my life and my family’s life…so its been fun.

Who is your biggest inspiration right at this moment and why?
On one level, and I know this might some corny to some, Deepak Chopra. I’ve re-engaged with his work and realized how much of my life centers around his work. It’s serendipity that at this stage in my life I make this realization. BUT my always inspiration in life has always been my four kids. I want to leave them as much as I can in life and I always think of them to motivate and inspire.
