Meet Philip Santos Schaffer & The Anthropologists Save The World!

Save the WorldName: Philip Santos Schaffer
What is your current project? The Anthropologists Save The World!
Where are you performing your show and why is it a good fit for your production?

I am so excited to be working with The Anthropologists on this show! Within an hour of meeting for the first time, Melissa and I were discussing how we both recently had shifted to vegetarianism. My theatre education and experience is largely based in political theatre, and I am always looking for new ways that theatre can intersect with political action. I believe this show achieves that, on top of being a great night of theatre!
What’s next for you?
I am getting ready to go into my thesis year in Columbia’s MFA Dramaturgy program, looking at a fall that will hopefully include a lot of traveling, and working with my own theatre company, WalkUpArts.
What is the name of the last show you saw?
The Hunger Artist
Any advice for your peers?

Many of the best things I know, I learned from my peers, so I don’t know if I can give so much advice. Get a loft bed and keep your phone below it, so you have to get out of bed to turn the alarm off. I stayed in a job I hated for two years because I didn’t know what else I would do, and I wish I hadn’t done that.

Meet Shannon Stowe and New Dance Theatre & Asylum

Name: Shannon Stowe / New Dance Theatre

What is your current project? Asylum

Where are you performing your show and why is it a good fit for your production?

Access Theater in Tribeca. We have been in residency with Access this year and we have been offered this opportunity for co-production as part of the Darkroom Developed series in which projects are seen from development to completion. Access Theater’s mission as a cost-effective curated arts venue seeking innovative, not-for-profit producing organizations devoted to new works in the Off-Off Broadway community makes them a perfect match. The Gallery Space is also a space that we just loved as being perfect for our needs. The people are right, the place is right, and we really fit into their programming.

What’s next for you?

I personally will be working with Strange Harbor on a devised piece about Italian Baroque Painter, Artemisia Gentileschi. With New Dance Theatre, there are a few things lined up including a showcase featuring short works created by the company members and guest choreographers, our take on Shakespeare, and further development of a movement play written by company member Ilan Ben-Yehuda.

What is the name of the last show you saw?

Cabaret at the New School for Drama

Any advice for your peers?

Risk. Don’t be afraid to let go. Try everything to find what works. Work from a place of truth and belief in your work, not having to prove your creative vision is “right” or “correct.” These are things I’ve been reminded of during our creative process.

Past productions include Stricken (New School for Drama, Emerging Artists New Works Series), A Date for the Evening (Emerging Artists New Works Series, The Frigid Fringe, and the San Francisco Fringe Festival) and Lamia (Westbeth Theatre). Shannon Stowe (Artistic Director) has an MFA in Acting from the New School for Drama where she is also on faculty. BASTARD JONES Now through July 16

IMG_0047.PNG“Randy yet ingenuous; it’s like a very bawdy Disney movie, with hummable pop music to match… smartly plotted and irrepressible.” — Time Out

“High-spirited… its nonjudgmental approach to sex and disability, and its brash desire to entertain, are winning. ” — The New York Times

“If I could fill this review with synonyms for ‘brilliant’ it still wouldn’t be enough, or do justice to just how good ‘Bastard Jones’ is…Run now, before you have to go on a wait list to see it on Broadway where it will surely find a deserving, long-term home.” — Stage Buddy

“Full of sexual innuendos, talented singers, and debauchery, Bastard Jones is a heck of a good time… This a wonderful way to spend an evening.” — Theater Is Easy

“Incredibly clever, zany and sexy… will bring such joy to your heart and a ‘tingle’ to everywhere else.” — BroadwayWorld

“I was impressed, delighted and amused by this highly creative, bawdy and effervescent musical… as much or more fun than most Broadway fare including ‘Hello Dolly.'” — eMusings

nancy manocherian’s the cell (Artisitic Director, Kira Simring) announces an extension of the World Premiere of BASTARD JONES, a rock musical comedy based on Henry Fielding’s bawdy 18th century novel, The History of Tom Jones. With book, lyrics, & direction by Marc Acito (Broadway’s Allegiance); music & lyrics by Amy Engelhardt (Grammy nominees The Bobs); and choreography by Joe Barros (Hard Times), performances will continue through July 16 at the cell.

BASTARD JONES is a rollicking adventure of deception, misunderstanding and bed-hopping. It centers on Tom Jones, a bastard-born charmer with a heart of gold and a knack for trouble who’s looking for love in all the wrong places. Tom gets banished from the only home he knows simply for expressing his true self, leading him to conscription in the army, a half-naked romp at a country inn and a stint as the boy-toy to an aristocrat whose machinations make Dangerous Liaisons look like child’s play.

The groundbreaking, diverse nine-member cast of BASTARD JONES stars Evan Ruggiero in the title role. Ruggiero, who was recently featured on “Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and starred in The Toxic Avenger at Pittsburgh CLO, becomes the first amputee to star in a musical in New York. The production also features Elena Wang, who went on for Lea Salonga in Allegiance; newcomer Alie B. Gorie, who is legally blind; Crystal Lucas-Perry (Little Children Dream of God at Roundabout), Rene Ruiz (Toxic Audio); Cheryl Stern (Broadway’s La Cage Aux Folles opposite Kelsey Grammer); Tony Perry (National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene’s Shpiel! Shpiel! Shpiel!), Matthew McGloin (CasablancaBox) and Adam B. Shapiro (The Golden Bride). The production team features Matthew Liu (musical director), Gertjan Houben (lighting), M. Florian Staab (sound), Siena Zoe Allen (costumes), Bethany Mullins (costume associate), Louisa Pough (production stage manager), Kayla Santos (assistant stage manager), and Chris Steckel (production manager).

Because BASTARD JONES is about young people being banished simply for being themselves, 100% of the production’s proceeds will benefit Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund. To support the fundraising campaign, please visit http://www.gofundme.com/celljones.

BASTARD JONES runs through July 16; Tuesday – Friday at 8pm and Saturday at 4pm & 9pm and Sunday, July 16 at 2pm.

the cell is located at 338 W 23rd St, between 8th & 9th Avenues — accessible from the C & E trains at 23rd Street. Tickets are $40 for general admission, $60 for reserved seating, available at 800-838-3006 or http://www.thecelltheatre.org.

Name: Victoria Medina

What is your current project? One Nation, One Mission, One Promise

Where are you performing your show and why is it a good fit for your production?

The Steve and Marie Sgouros Theatre, under The Players Theatre Artist in Residence program. The Team at The Players Theatre are just amazing. Everyone is supportive and caring about the work that is being produced. The location is amazing, right in the heart of Greenwich Village, surrounded by the most beautiful and historic buildings and landmarks. One Nation, One Mission, One Promise brings the best of our history alive and the neighborhood around the theatre breathes life into our history and creates new memories everyday.

What’s next for you?

One Nation, One Mission, One Promise opens on July 8, 2017. We are excited to hear from the audience after the show during our talk back. The next step will be to re-stage the show based on our audience at The Steve and Marie Sgouros Theatre. In 2018 we look forward to growing into the main stage theatre, so stay tuned, because each performance will be its own unique experience.

What is the name of the last show you saw?

Any advice for your peers?

Read Sam Mendes 25 Steps to be a director. Many of his suggestions I think apply to all positions in theater production.

Victoria Medina, Playwright, Director, Producer

Victoria has been invited to participate in The Players Theatre Artist In Residence Program. For over twenty years she has dedicated her life to her three passions: photography, writing and performing. This theatrical journey, One Nation, One Mission, One Promise, represents the climactic 3rd stage of this project which includes all three disciplines along with speaking engagements. She is so excited to see her trifecta of photos, writing and theater come to full fruition!

It began life as the photographic art exhibit, American Spirit, and was then developed into an Amazon best-selling book entitled One Nation, One Mission, One Promise, featuring exhibit images alongside her original poetry and prose plus quotes from famous and not-so famous Americans. Images from the American Spirit exhibit were also featured in the debut stage production of the award-winning show, Zuccotti Park – The Musical.

Victoria is also delighted to have joined the Song of Solomon: A New Musical producing team. She has also produced Latinos and the Business of Acting at the Public Theatre, and has been on the production team of several independent films in Los Angeles.
